The College of the Extended University (CEU) is the educational outreach tool for the university providing career enhancement courses, professional development certificates, advanced degrees and customized training programs for today’s adult learners. Each year, new college graduates, working professionals and mid-career managers select our courses and degree programs because of our Learn by Doing approach and our expert instructors who bring real-world experience and business solutions into the classroom.
Our students come from a variety of industries and professions. As a result, we offer a wide range of program areas to choose from. Our flexible evening and weekend course schedules help make attending class more convenient for those with full-time jobs. We also offer a wide range of career training and instructor-led online classes for students who prefer to learn at their own pace – when and where it is most convenient.
Individuals who wish to try out a new area of study, or those who want to finish their degree or change career fields, are able to choose from hundreds of academic credit courses offered through the Open University program. Participation in this program requires no formal admission to the university and credits earned are transferable to other CSU and UC campuses.
Working in collaboration with local and regional employers and government agencies, the CEU provides customized training programs to meet the immediate needs of today’s workforce and tomorrow’s leaders. We also offer the same type of customizable training to international professionals from around the world through our Global Education Programs. The CEU, in collaboration with the International Center, further fulfills its mission by offering an extensive variety of Study Abroad options year-round for students who wish to engage in international or multi-cultural studies.

Thousands of people have benefited over the years from completing a CEU certificate program, and these programs continue to be one of the core offerings of the college. These intensive, short-term programs focus on key industry trends and advancement, which enable individuals to upgrade their skills in a particular subject area in a relatively short time. Subject areas include human resource management, plastics engineering technology, construction management, project management, six sigma, supply chain management, sustainable meeting and event management and many others. We also offer a variety of test preparation courses including Engineer-in-Training (EIT) F.E. Review, Supply Chain Management, and Project Management: PMP Certificate..
During the past five years there has been an increased demand for online courses at the CEU. As a result, the CEU has collaborated with several colleges on campus to develop industry-specific online courses including: Supply Chain Management Certificate, Project Management: PMP Exam Preparation, MEPE Review Course, Introduction to Six Sigma for Managers Certificate, Sustainable Meeting & Event Management Certificate and the Added Authorization/Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
In addition, the CEU has partnered with online education leader, ed2go, to offer a broader range of programs. These rigorous online courses and certificates provide more flexibility than a traditional classroom setting can, while still delivering the quality education you have come to expect from our programs. For many, online courses are the perfect way to start a new career, enhance marketability, or simply learn a new skill . . . all from the comfort of your home or office!
Through a combination of consulting, training and tools, CEU works to align the corporate learning strategies of our clients to their business strategies. Customized corporate training programs of varying lengths are offered in the following areas: Leadership and Organizational Development and Training, and Local Government Training.
In addition, many of our on-campus certificates and courses are also available for customization and delivery on-site at corporations and businesses–helping employers stay abreast of advancing technologies, trends and skills essential in today’s workplace. Courses may be selected from our list of key program areas or may be chosen from our online course catalog where the content and timeframes can be combined, expanded, or streamlined to meet the specific needs of the company.
In addition to on-campus certificate programs we offer six (6) advance degree programs designed specifically for working professionals. These credit programs offer many advantages including flexible scheduling and some are even offered convenient off-campus locations.
Master of Interior Architecture: Offered collaboratively by Cal Poly Pomona and UCLA Extension, this program is available only through the CEU. Students are accepted from varied academic backgrounds, including non-design disciplines. This program particularly serves career-change students seeking to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming an interior design professional.
Master of Science in Geology: The College of Science in collaboration with the CEU offers a Master of Science in Geology designed to prepare graduates for employment in all fields of geology, as well as teaching at secondary and community college levels.
Master of Science in Hospitality Management: This is the only hospitality management graduate degree program of its kind in California. The MSHM degree, program exposes students to advanced management concepts including accounting and finance, marketing, strategic management, human resources management, as well as qualitative and quantitative analytical skills as they pertain specifically to the hospitality industry.
Master of Science in Systems Engineering:This program provides a broad education and opportunities for students to design engineering systems, solve operational problems, and shape organizational structures. It includes courses in engineering management, the science and business of systems thinking, management of innovation, leadership management, business risk analysis and assessment and analytical tools and techniques to lead, redesign, anticipate, and manage organizational change in an interdisciplinary environment.
Accelerated Master of Science in Accountancy: The Accelerated MSA program is designed for working professionals who wish to advance their careers, either as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or in another area of accounting. Students in the accelerated program take three courses per quarter to complete the program within one year. Courses are offered in the evening and weekends in a combination of face-to face, online and hybrid classes.
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering: This program provides advanced studies for graduates willing to further their knowledge in electrical engineering. This program offers state-of-the-art instruction for BSEE, BSCpE or closely related graduates who intend to supplement their initial degree.
One of the most recognized and important offerings to the local and campus community is the Open University program. Designed so that individuals may enroll in many of the traditional on-campus courses without official university admission, Open University is a popular choice for those who want to develop new career skills, sample a new subject, or take classes while waiting for formal admission to the university. Open University enrollment is offered on a space available basis for all classes.
CEU provides training and professional development programs for government officials, business leaders and educators from around the world. Our customized programs are known in many countries and support information exchange and professional growth and development in varied fields. Programs can last from several weeks to a year or more. We are certified by the State Administration of Foreign Experts (SAFEA) to offer training in China under Global Education Programs.
Cal Poly English Language Institute: The primary focus of the Cal Poly English Language Institute (CPELI) is to prepare international students for academic study at an American college or university. By participating in a variety of activities in addition to classroom sessions, students not only gain the language skills they need to succeed, but they also learn to adapt socially and academically. This acculturation is what sets CPELI apart from many other English language programs.
Global Education Programs: For over a decade the CEU has been providing training and managing international assistance and development programs for government officials, business leaders and educators from around the world. We have worked in or with groups from many countries including China, Bulgaria, Swaziland, Cyprus, Turkey, South Korea and Vietnam. Our International Education Program provides instruction in management and public administration, as well as research and business facilitation services and teacher training programs to clients from emerging market economies. Programs can last from several weeks to a year or more.
